11 Points: 11 Gorgeously Ironic Misspellings In Protest Signs - 11Points.com

  • Dasher11 · 1 month ago
Ahh, this kind of list is bound to draw lots of angry "WHERE IS THE LIBERAL-BASHING LIST?!" comments. It does seem like Republicans tend to fall into 2 categories: very smart Ivy Leaguers and half-retarded redneck bigots. And unfortunately, only the latter make signs.

I share your rage not only against spelling errors, but against people who throw around the word "socialism". I couldn't even count how many times I've heard Obama called a "Marxist socialist". Of course, when you point out that Marxism is communism and not socialism, people's eyes just glaze over because they have no idea that there is a difference between the 2.

2 final thoughts before I turn into a crazy political rambler:
-Why do people (Republicans) care so much about what language immigrants speak? For a political party that supposedly is against strong, authoritative government, they seem to be greatly in favor of policing peoples' lives.
-Why do people consider universal health care a scary socialist policy, but consider universal police protection and education standard democracy? (That's a rhetorical question; it's because they're idiots.)

I made the same general comment about the marxism/socialism difference earlier. Glad to see someone else understands.

    About your 2 thoughts:
I don't think it's about the language, it's more about the whole "close the borders" thing. Just one more supporting argument for their cause. Republicans are so far away from what they were in the Thomas Jefferson era it makes me sick. They no longer advocate for strong state governments and lessening the power of the federal government. They should do us all a favor and officially change their party name to something else, because what they want is very far from a republic. Democrats of course want the largest and most over-reaching federal government they possibly can create, and police peoples lives in more indirect ways. They treat them like sheep that cannot think for themselves, and some can't. Unfortunately in modern society natural selection doesn't exist anymore, and these people haven't faded out of the gene pool.

Just two cents from a raging Libertarian.

Not to be "that guy" but...you realize the political party system has gone through five permutations since ole TJ was leading the Jeffersonian-Republicans right? Both parties are far far far from where they were two centuries ago and have gone through numerous changes. And Dasher, your observation about two types of Republicans can easily be said about Democrats except in three parts: highly educated people, ghetto rats, and uneducated hippies. It works both ways.
  • Dasher11 · 1 month ago
I can agree to that, Cody. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was saying, "...but liberals are all smart!"
  • mark · 1 month ago
Liberals aren't all smart - to be sure (and just fyi, I'm neither liberal nor conservative, I'm an anarchist if you must know) - but let's not pretend fake balance here. There is an overwhelming correlation between lack of education and right-wing, especially Christian right, politics. The more educated you are, on average, the more left. That's why the right says that academia is biased against conservatism. It is hard to find conservative Christians in colleges, but that is just because it is very hard to maintain such an idiotic politics when you actually think about things and talk to people different from yourself.
  • Erik Sommers · 1 month ago
Of course. I mean hell... democrats used to be pro-slavery and now African Americans are their most steadfast supporters. I think my problem with how far the republicans have strayed as opposed to the democrats is that they have abandoned their single core belief which is a smaller federal government. Both parties are growing the federal government at an alarming rate, but, the difference is the democrats were never against that.
  • john harvard · 1 month ago
It really isn't comparable the way that republicans and democrats are split. Republicans include the super-rich and those easily duped by the super rich. What they share in common is the idea that if the government leaves their money alone but enforces social rules, things will be as they "should" be. This attracts rich people who don't want their money taxed and poor, uneducated but (and this is important) MAINSTREAM DOMINANT-CULTURED WHITE CHRISTIAN folks because both groups adapt well to the philosophy that all ideas outside of tradition should be feared and torpedoed and that what is to be "valued" is thier mainstream culture.

Democrats are split too, but the split exists between 1. an elite class of the educated which cares about the welfare of the country not by protecting a certain way of life, but by protecting ALL ways of life and 2. otherwise self-interested conservatives who are NOT part of the mainstream white christian culture. This is why the appeal of monetary redistribution appeals to democrats -- the party is composed of 90% selfish traditional conservatives who feel out-competed by mainstream white culture and just want their cut, and 10% people who think that this lopsided situation is unfair and that mediation needs to take place between the different cultures to give each one a fair chance to survive. Hippies are the exact same way, in fact. some of them are extremely intelligent and highly moral and their message is "care for everyone by destroying the oppressive system" , and some just want to live a rule-free lifestyle because they're selfish, and their message is "enable my childish behavior by destroying the oppressive system". It can be hard to distinguish between the two because they both oppose tradition and conformity but for vastly different reasons.

it is totally unfair to say that both parties are split in the same way. republicans come from either power or tradition to preserve their dominant culture and democrats come from either empathy or culturally comparative jealousy to break up the old boys' game and give everyone a fair shot.

Dude your(sic) a legend for putting this together.

Number 6 is just such a 'mavrik', they don't respect standardised spelling! Badass!
  • JC · 1 month ago
YES! Yale with a 6 is probably my most favourite simpsons joke ever. That and 'Look at him standing on his hind legs, like a yound Rory Calhoon.'

    :-)
  • willux · 1 month ago
I think Number 6 only has one spelling mistake.
I think the guy is against whoever is the most social; hence he is against the "Socialest" person.
  • EnduringGundam · 1 month ago
I want to go to one of the "Tea-Bagger" (Seriously who decided that was a good name for them?) protests with a big red Sharpie, and walk around correcting spelling and grammar mistakes. Then grade the signs, and be really passive aggressive about it. Yeah I'm a troll in real life.
  • tombee · 1 month ago
    You are soooooo edgy!
  • Patrick Ross · 1 month ago
God, these were great. As a resident Grammar Nazi I both loved seeing these horrendous mistakes and rued every moment of it like hearing the sound of nails down a chalkboard.
  • Erik Sommers · 1 month ago
I'm a little disappointed in this list Sam. I had you fingered as someone who would point out stupid mistakes on signs from both the political right and left, instead of just standing firmly on the left. As a Libertarian, I enjoy laughing at the bumbling mistakes of both political parties, not just the "unpopular" one. (OMG, Obama is so in... being a Republican is soooooo 1988)

I'm sure you've realized by now, I'm pretty opinionated (i.e. my ridiculous rant on which form of soda is the best), and I accept this. It's probably the main reason i stand atop the political diamond with my middle finger up to both the left and the right while crapping on the socialists at the bottom (even though I agree that socialism is being thrown under the bus by everyone these days, if Obama is anything besides a liberal he is a Marxist, which is different from a Socialist). But in order to crap on said Socialists, i need my butt to be perfectly level with a cheek resting on both conservatives and liberals.

Anyway, I hope this is just a precursor to a list that equally slams liberals. If not, it's your blog, and you're totally free to take whatever side you want, I just pictured you as someone who doesn't pull any punches when addressing a subject matter. Because that would be a very Fox News thing to do.

I tried. I tried, I tried, I tried. I searched for at least 30 minutes for one, just one, liberal sign with an ironic misspelling. And I couldn't find a single one. Eventually it was 3:30 am and I just had to go with what I had.
  • Erik Sommers · 1 month ago
As long as you tried, that is good enough for me. Hey, I'm no fool... most of the horrid signs I have seen are right-leaning as well. But I have never spent extensive time searching. I figured there are some out there. I found a couple, but they aren't as ironic as some of the ones above for sure. The second one you'll appreciate as a grammar enthusiast. It's a good then/than mix-up.

I found both of those during my research process but, yeah, like you said -- those are simply spelling mistakes, not ironic spelling mistakes.

So all these English-Only "people" will be deporting themselves when the time comes?

Ahhh, someone already caught the Simpsons reference! I love that line too- "I'm not made of airports!!"

The bottom right one on #8 is bugging me so much!
    "a extremist"
    "extremey"
    "amesty"
  • Trevor Hegstrom · 1 month ago
From this page one might infer that republicans are bad spellers. Aren't there any pro-Obama or anti-McCain people who can't spell or punctuate? (I'm not republican, I just worry when humorists use their humor to take a stance on politics, because then you run the risk of becoming as funny as Mallard Fillmore). So, yeah. Any dumb left-wingers?
  • 11points · 1 month ago
Trevor, I promise you, I tried. I searched and searched and searched. I found a couple of misspelled signs from pro-gay marriage protests... but the misspellings weren't ironic. I hate that I couldn't balance this out even a little.
  • Robert V · 1 month ago
    Good point by Trevor.

Are right-wingers more likely to make spelling mistakes?
    OR
Are we more likely to notice and report mistakes when made by right-wingers?

    Or both?
  • Mikey · 1 month ago
It is mostly likely that liberals more often have nice computers and decent Photoshop skills. Most of these even I, with my lowly Photoshop talents, could revise in a couple of minutes.
  • Erik Sommers · 1 month ago
It's likely that liberals are younger. Most college students I see tend to be very liberal (because they aren't paying taxes yet and just want to help everyone). They have the knowledge and equipment to very quickly post those images or do any necessary photoshop work. Conservatives tend to be older and don't have these skills or the time in which to implement them.
  • mrshosey08 · 1 month ago
I'm suprised you didn't mention anything about #8 using "A" instead of "AN"...You know as in "He was such an hero,".
  • e cigarette · 1 month ago
Oh the irony. The wanna be political, overly concerned, rednecked fire only fanned by fox news blowing farts at them
  • Susan · 1 month ago
Will you be giving equal time to liberals who can't spell? Just curious.
  • 11points · 1 month ago
I've said it a few times in the comments -- I searched forever for one, even
one, left-wing sign with an ironic spelling mistake. I could not find one. I
found a your/you're switch on a gay marriage sign but it wasn't ironic...
and that was it. I would've loved to include one.
  • tombee · 1 month ago
You apparently don't look very hard when you are trying to make sure you "prove" the point that only people who lean conservative are retarded:

    http://zombietime.com/gaza_war_protest/IMG_8567... - Jews are terroist!

I suggest you just scroll through zombietime.

The irony indeed, cigarette. Wanting to be political and overly concerned is solely the ground of the right and certainly you leftists aren't fanned by any "farts" of the moveon.org type....
  • 11points · 1 month ago
Ironic spelling mistakes. This list was looking for ironic spelling mistakes. I would've loved to include that Jews are terroist sign, or the Death to all Juice sign I posted a few days earlier... but compare that to a sign saying "Speak English, respect are language" and they're not in the same ballpark.
  • Alan · 1 month ago
Damn this is good stuff. Whenever someone wants me to be patriotic I think of the hell that is the photo montage of #1 and my stomach turns. One day patriotism will represent inclusion but until then we're all a bunch of morans or Rory Calhouns.
  • jim · 1 month ago
I started to think that these people were smart and intentionally spelled something wrong on their sign, knowing it would get more attention/publicity/circulation, but then I realized they're probably not...

Still, if I ever go to a protest I'm spelling my sign wrong, definitely more likely to be noticed.
  • amrith777 · 1 month ago
Regarding #7--I lived for a time in the small town of Crestwood,IL and was quite surprised to see it included in your list.Chester Stranzcek has been the mayor there for as long as I can remember.I went to grade school with his son,and his son was the one who first got me into Wacky Package stickers.Anyway--Mayor Stranzcek is very literate and his son was quite bright,as I remember---I doubt it was he who placed the letters on that sign.
Still--I agree with you---whomever is responsible DID create a major gaffe.
  • Steve · 1 month ago
#6 was just a few blocks from my house in Austin... I'm pretty sure it was meant as a sarcastic joke.
  • Mike · 1 month ago
    http://www.snopes.com/photos/signs/mlkday.asp

Not political per se, but still cringe-worthy in terms of sign mistakes
  • 11points · 1 month ago
I'd actually had those signs on my site earlier, in this post: http://www.11points.com/Misc/11_Best_Photos_of_...
  • oldwolves · 1 month ago
Since this was an obvious attempt to make the right wingers look bad, may I suggest a site that equalizes the game?

    http://newsrealblog.com/2009/11/07/educating-th...
  • 11points · 1 month ago
It wasn't any kind of attempt to make right wingers look bad. I was looking for protest signs that had ironic misspellings. None of the ones in this link you sent have that. This wasn't a political post, it was a spelling post.
  • Michael Willett · 1 month ago
    Just wonderfully coincidental.
Easily my favorite list so far. Keep up the good work, kind Sir.
  • oldwolves · 1 month ago
So there were no misspelled signs from the left? Sure. If you were being
intellectually honest you would have shown signs from both sides of the
political spectrum making for a fair and balanced posting as apposed to the
biased nuance you made. I was hoping for something other than the Jon
Stewart political bias from your web site, that's all.
  • MauricioCameron · 1 month ago
Are you saying you don't like Jon Stewart?
  • oldwolves · 1 month ago
With the serious situation our country is finding itself in and with today's
youth getting their political news from sources like Mr. Stewart... I find
his humor somewhat uneven. I grew up with the original Saturday night Live'
cast that attacked everyone from all political persuasions.
They attacked every one equally. You laughed because you found truth in the
humor. Listening to Mr. Stewart makes my skin crawl. Though I have to give
him credit for attacking the MSM for their obvious attempt at protecting
ACORN. If he were to Attack Obama with the same joy as he did when attacking
Bush, then I may listen to him again. After all the screw ups Obama has made
the material would be never ending. But He knows that if he attacks Obama
his career would be over. It's not like integrity matters anymore.
  • toastnuances · 1 month ago
    that's "everyone". one word.
  • toastnuances · 1 month ago
*opposed. and what does "biased nuance" mean?
  • oldwolves · 1 month ago
Leaning towards disrespectful attitudes, created with false facts and
opinions, with a continuous bombardment of one way 'anti messages' for the
sake of making someone look bad without giving the other side a fair shot to
respond, knowing the audience has a predisposition towards the target due to
a social and politically engineered mindset. Feeding the frenzy of emotional
imbalance for the sake of indoctrination. You know...that old chestnut.
  • toastnuances · 1 month ago
ah okay. think you could have phrased it better in the body of your first post but w/e
  • oldwolves · 1 month ago
No problem. Now where is this all going? Is this just a nice conversation or
is this going to end up in some web page? lol
  • toastnuances · 1 month ago
nah man, just wanted to clear it up. I think you're seeing bias where there is none (and I'm generally quite aware of it, whether I agree or not--and in the interest of full disclosure I tend towards liberal modes of thinking) but I wanted to fully understand what you were saying. no big
  • oldwolves · 1 month ago
You? Lean left? No!!!!!!! lol And I , watching fox news , see no
conservative bias. Funny how that works. I dated a doctor once who never saw
a healthy person either. She saw something wrong with everyone. (Like a bad
Seinfeld episode) Did she see everyone's illness on a compassionate, level
or was it because she was trained to? There in lies, what I believe, the
difference between conservatives and liberal mindsets.
  • @ashromano · 1 week ago
im hard core right wing, and i find this post hilarious! stupid people are funny, end of story, and that is what sam is pointing out... yeah he's definitely left wing but he's still funny, that is a fact
